Supporting Ambition: How Mentorship Helped Drive Structure and Growth
Discover how Dorset Business Mentors provided practical support and strategic insight to help a growing business clarify its offering, connect with corporate clients, and lay the foundations for long-term success.
This case study shares the journey of Kathy, a business owner with a vision to scale her services beyond psychotherapy and coaching. Here’s how mentorship helped her turn that ambition into a structured growth plan.
The Starting Point
When I approached Dorset Business Mentors, my business was at a pivotal stage. I had a clear vision, to expand beyond my 121 therapy and coaching services and to develop a structured Neurodiversity offering to a wider audience. While I had strong experience in counselling and coaching neurodivergent people, I needed guidance to turn this vision into a sustainable, scalable business.
Creating Space to Think Strategically
My business model lacked clarity. I had a thriving business supporting individuals and had developed a free local support group. But my ambition was to work at scale delivering Neurodiversity Awareness to a bigger audience. Despite having the expertise, I faced challenges in:
· Defining my niche and positioning my services effectively.
· Creating a structured business plan and identifying the steps in getting from vision to impact.
· Developing a strong pipeline and converting interest into revenue.
· Navigating operational processes such as contracting and vendor setup.
I wanted to move from ideas to implementation and create a sustainable business strategy for growth.
Foundations for the Future
Through Dorset Business Mentors, I was paired with Caroline Whaley, an experienced mentor with a career spanning global leadership roles and coaching. Caroline has worked with world-class organisations, including Nike in senior brand and general management positions, and later co-founded initiatives dedicated to empowering women and driving inclusive leadership. Her expertise in strategy, leadership development, and coaching brought invaluable insight to our sessions.
Caroline provided both strategic and practical support:
· Challenging my vision: I needed someone prepared to poke holes in my ideas, test my assumptions and help me refine my ‘what, why and how’.
· Connecting with corporate clients: With Caroline’s guidance, I was able to build relationships that resulted in two major contracts, generating over £50K in new revenue in a year.
· Operational guidance: From contracts and vendor setup to resource sharing, Caroline helped me streamline processes that were slowing progress.
· Pipeline building and workshop design: Together, we created a clear lead generation strategy and designed impactful workshops tailored to client needs.
· Strategic focus: Caroline has worked with me to refine my vision and create a plan for future growth, including service offering and lead generation.
Caroline’s mentorship gave me structure, clarity and the tools to scale effectively. It also provided an experienced perspective, someone who could see my blind spots and help me identify and address gaps in my knowledge and experience.
The Difference It Made
2025 was a breakthrough year. I moved from development to delivery of my core programme, secured significant corporate contracts and built a strong pipeline for future growth. As I enter 2026, the focus is on converting these opportunities into further success and refining my offering to meet the demands of a changing landscape around neuroinclusion.
